Dental Glossary

A newer approach in medicine aimed at restoring function to damaged organs and tissues with artificial materials and/or the patients' own cells. Although regeneration of tissues and organs can be achieved by medical transplantation, there are problems associated with a lack of suitable donors. However, the development of regenerative medicine has resolved this problem. Implant treatment is a typical therapeutic approach using artificial materials. In addition, typical therapeutic approaches using the patients' own cells include use of cultured mucosal epithelium and cultured bone. Both of these approaches are expected to have applications in dentistry. The use of patient's own cells allows repeative treatment through cell preservation as well as transplantation treatment without rejection.
